Strong and Weak Beats


Second grade students feel strong and weak

beats between their shoe and sock feet.

Single shoes lined the walls of the music classrooms this week as second graders put the beat in their feet. First, students learned the poem Giants and tapped the steady beat. The beat became an alternating pattern, a marching-in-place pattern and finally a stepping pattern.


Students removed the shoe from their non-dominant foot and stepped around the room to the beat as they recited the poem.


“We could hear the strong and weak beats from our steps,” remarked one student.
